Ophelia Aranda a resident of San Pedro, California was given her angel wings at 1:05 am on November 14, 2012 to join and rejoice with her maker. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Ophelia had touched in some small way throughout her memorable life. Her life may seem short to many, but those who were touched by her understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. Ophelia was born November 13, 1927, in San Pedro, California to Jose and Esperanza Aranda and was the third born of five girls. Ophelia grew up in San Pedro and attended San Pedro High School. She is survived by her sister Emma Medina; Children, Frank and Carlos Armenta, Alice Garcia and Pam Acevedo; Grandchildren, Timothy, Jason and Matthew Armenta, Diane Gerstel, Yvette Burnett, Brenda Ferrell, Anthony and Ernie Garcia; Great Grandchildren: Kevin and Kyle Armenta, Isabella and Keila Gerstel, Ellie and Ryan Armenta and Jacob Burnett and numerous other family and friends. Although she was frail in her final days, she gave us all such courage and hope and reminded us of the preciousness of life. She loved life and always tried to make it interesting for herself as well as for others around her. Her greatest accomplishment in life was in loving, procuring and providing for her four children. She raised her children virtually on her own being both Mother and “Father”, many times struggling to make ends meet and at times working two jobs to provide food and shelter for her children, but no matter what she always persevered and managed to make ends meet. She was called the mad scientist by her children as she pondered in the kitchen many times trying to figure out a new and different way to serve rice and beans! She enjoyed many things in life but again her focus in life was her children. She was a great mother and will be missed greatly. Memorial Services to pay last respect will be 12:00 noon on November 19, 2012 at Gamby Funeral Home, 25001 Narbonne Avenue, Lomita California 90717. Ophelia will be cremated with her final resting place at Green Hills Memorial Park, 27501 South Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275 at a later date.
