Barbara Lucile Murphree (née VanNest) Barbara Murphree was born Jan. 4th, 1921 in Santa Monica to Lucile Marie and Charles Henry VanNest. She passed away in her sleep on Nov.12, 2012 after 91.8 years. In-between she enjoyed a long, productive life. Barbara spent her early years in Montana and Nevada where her dad was a mining engineer. Later they moved to the San Gabriel Valley. As a young woman, she trained as a nurse at Huntington Memorial Hospital, graduating as WWII ended. It was there that she met and married the love of her life, Murl Dee Murphree. They were together 53 years and blessed with Karen and Kerry. In 1954 Barbara obtained her B.S. in the then new field of Advanced Psychiatric Nursing at UC Berkley and went on to teach at the University of Michigan. After several years on staff she obtained her M.S. in Psychiatric Nursing at U of M. The cold winters took their toll and the family returned to southern California where Barbara taught Psychiatric Nursing at UCLA, CSULA, Pasadena City and Compton Community Colleges and at two hospitals. At 51, she became a School Psychologist for LAUSD until she retired at age 70. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, stepmother Ada (aka Pat), sister Jeannie Horner and husband Murl. She is survived by her sister Elizabeth, children Karen and Kerry (Leesa), grandchildren Dane (Jordana), Tamara, Jessica May (Clancy), and great grandchildren Tatiana and Nicole. A memorial service will be held Friday Nov. 16, 11:00 AM at Reardon Simi Valley Funeral Home, 2636 Sycamore Drive.
