Alva Allen Andrews

Alva Allen Andrews, 94, of South Bend, Indiana departed this life on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, after an extended illness. He was born in Dover, Oklahoma, on September 21, 1918 to the union of Oliver D. Andrews Sr. and Phyllis Anna (Wilson) Andrews. Both parents preceded him in death.


Many years ago, he relocated to South Bend, Indiana from Dover, Oklahoma. He retired from Clark Equipment Co. in Buchanan, Michigan where he worked in the Payroll Department for many years.


Alva accepted Christ as his Savior early in life. He was a member of Olivet A.M.E. Church, where he worked, for many years, within the Steward Board as treasurer; a member of the Usher Board, as well as being a church greeter. Alva was a very dedicated member of the Lay Organization; and was active in the Indiana Conference Lay Organization where he was one of the original members of the Indiana Conference Lay Male Chorus. Alva was a member of St. Peter’s Lodge #31, Free and Accepted Masons Prince Hall Affiliated and was an active member of the NAACP.


He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Betty E. Andrews; daughter, Ira J. Andrews; stepdaughters, Shirley [Lee] Lancaster and Wanda [Lowery] Anderson; stepson, Maurice Lee; grandchildren: LaToya Surratt, Sonya Andrews, Aldrina Andrews, Shauntessa Andrews, Andre Andrews, Shawn Andrews, Alva Andrews III, Damian Andrews, LaVar Andrews and NaShawn (Danielle) Brown; great-grandchildren, Tashara Harrison, Shannon Harrison, Denika Staggers, Justice Staggers, Imonie Mickley, Darrion M. Herrell, Vincent Hill; great-great granddaughter, Chanelle Brown; daughter-in-law, Myrtha Andrews; two nieces: Normajean (Granville) Sims and Ula L. Cole; two nephews: Edgar J. Andrews and Donald (Vickie) Younger; great-nephew, Jackie M. Andrews; along with a host of relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.


Alva was preceded in death by a son, Alva Allen Andrews Jr.; a daughter, Denise M. Andrews; three brothers: Nelson Andrews, Oliver Andrews and Millard Andrews; two sisters: Ira Sweeny and Bulla Andrews.

Funeral services for Alva Allen Andrews will be held on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 in Olivet A.M.E. Church, 719 N. Notre Dame Avenue. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and services at 12:00 noon. Burial will take place in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, South Bend.
