Charles Julian Moore

U.S. Veteran

Charles Julian Moore was born on July 2, 1931 to Dee and Leona Moore in Longview, Texas. In his third year at Baylor University, at the age of 19, he joined the Navy as a cadet in the Naval Floght Program in Pensacola and there me his wife, Dian, a native of Pensacola. In 1951, he earned his Navy Wings of Gold and was commissioned as an Ensign. Rising through the ranks, he commanded two Pacific Fleet squadrons, VAW – 114 and RVAW – 10. Having served as Weapons Officer on the USS Kitty Hawk, he commanded USS Vancouver, LPD – 2 and USS Okinawa, LPH – 3, the latter as a principal warship during the evacuations of Phnom Pehn and Saigon. He advanced to flag rank in 1980 and in 1985 he retired a Rear Admiral from the Pentagon. His awards include the Legions of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal and Navy Commendation Medal. He graduated from the University of Colorado with a BA in Physics magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. He holds a Master of Science in Physics Degree from the Naval Postgraduate School.

He is survived by his wife, Dian Moore, his son, Charles J. Moore, Jr., his daughters Brenda and Meg, 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Monday, October 8 from 5-7 pm at Waters & Hibbert Funeral Home, 124 West Gregory Street in Pensacola. Private graveside services with full military honors at Barrancas National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made in his name to the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 1752, Pensacola, Florida 32591. WATERS & HIBBERT FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
