Mr. Charles J. Palmer, 79, of 2016 Camden Road, Holly Hill, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2012.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Greater Unity AME Church, 744 Coach Road, Holly Hill, with the Rev. Julius Steed, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Palmer was born in Holly Hill, son of the late Gordon Palmer and Mrs. Peggy Jefferson Palmer. He grew up in the Unity section of Holly Hill and attended the public schools here before graduating from Alston High School in Summerville. He moved away to New York City, where he was employed by Kennedy Airport and the Sanitation Department of New York City. He was the owner/operator of Palmer Bus Lines. Upon his return to Holly Hill, he continued his bus service and was an employee of Shuler-Marshall Funeral Home for more than 25 years. He was a transportation specialist with Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office for 18-plus years. He was a member of the Motor Coach Association of South Carolina.
Early in life, he became a member of Unity AME Church (now Greater Unity). While in New York, he joined Allen AME Church. He was vice president of the Unity Crowd Association of New York, an organization that made many outstanding contributions to Greater Unity. He reconnected with Greater Unity where he served as a former class leader, trustee and steward.
Charles was preceded in death by a son, Victor Palmer, and a brother, Henry Palmer.
His survivors include his wife, Mrs. Wilhelmina Simon Palmer of the home; children, Barbara Jean (Eugene) White of Atlanta, Vincent Palmer and Vicki (William) Palmer-Sparrow, both of Houston, Texas, Vanessa (Tracy) Palmer-Clay and Gordon (Kandi) Palmer, both of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Andrew Fuller of Columbia; stepdaughter, Honey Sue Christian of Forestville, Md.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; niece and nephews, sisters-in-law; and a number of devoted cousins and friends.
