Arthur Alfred Kobs, age 77, of Marion passed away on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton after suffering from pneumonia and two strokes.
He was born on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1934 to August and Elsie Kobs in Nashville, TN. When his sister Margaret was born thirteen months later they moved back to Milwaukee. Arthur lived a very adventurous life. In his teen years he spent two summers in Idaho, working as a firefighter for the forestry department. Upon graduating from Rufus King High School in Milwaukee, he flew to Europe, bought a bicycle and for nine months traveled throughout Europe on his bike with his cousin, Fred Brunke. When he returned to the United States, Arthur joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. After serving his country he headed west to California and was able to attend college at the University of California, Berkley Campus through the GI Bill. Arthur was interested in real estate properties. He enjoyed purchasing, restoring and reselling many properties. He relocated to the state of Florida and became a property manager. After living several years in Florida and surviving the crash of the real estate market in the 1980’s, Arthur decided to return to California. He worked as a property inspector for a senior gated community in California until he retired due to poor health.
In his senior years, Arthur suffered from Parkinson’s, several strokes and the onset of Dementia. In 2011, Arthur relocated to Wisconsin in order to be closer to family. He was able to live at Camelot Senior Apartments, Marion for fourteen months, enjoying the beautiful sunsets and various birds along the river. For the past five months, Arthur was cared for and living with his niece, Sarah and Kelly Loken near Big Falls with the assistance of his sister, Elsie and a grand-niece, Katie Dey.
Arthur is survived by his sisters; Margaret Parks, Atwater, CA and Elsie (Harold) Utke, Marion and other relatives, friends and his favorite cat, “Sassie”. He was preceded in death by his parents; August and Elsie Kobs, nephews; Dale Parks and Dale Utke.
A memorial service for Arthur will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at Grace Family Church, Main Street, Marion. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. until the hour of service at the church. Arthur’s ashes will be buried in the family plot at Winton Cemetery District, Winton, CA.
