Charlotte Lucille Roberts, 91, of Fond du Lac, peacefully drifted to sleep in the arms of our Loving Father on September 3, 2012, after a brief period with kidney disease.
Charlotte was born on January 27, 1921, to Gladys and Clifford Merwin, one of six children. During her school years, she enjoyed the sport of basketball, played clarinet, and graduated in 1939 from Goodrich High School.
She married Arthur Louie Roberts on December 7, 1939, working hard as they raised 12 children together.
Best known for her large family, Charlotte’s strength and quiet reserve supported her husband in his work as a paper carrier for the Milwaukee Sentinel/Journal. She worked outside the home, as well, in various restaurants, South Hills Country Club and as an inspector for the West Bend Company.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed picnics, going to the movies, playing cards, spending time with her children and grandchildren, car and bus trips, cruised to the Caribbean with her brother, Cy, and even traveled solo to Alaska by air, boat, and train.
Following the death of her husband in 1984, Charlotte moved to Grand Prairie, Texas, near one of her younger daughters and lived there for 10 years before returning to Fond du Lac. During her time in Texas, she flourished as an independent woman. She made friends easily and went right to work serving as president of the United Methodist Women at Inglewood United Methodist Church.
She is survived by seven children: Rhoda (John) Karst of Aiken, South Carolina, Jennifer Schmitz of Rosendale, Susan Zupke of Waupun, Linda Roberts of South Milwaukee, Bonnie (Yup) Kim of Kingwood, Texas, Marcia (Walter) Hyer of Arlington, Texas, and Donna Roberts of Fond du Lac; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Virginia Lipps of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and Dorothy Young of Fond du Lac; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on May 14, 1984; two infant daughters: Janet May and Corrine Anne; an infant son, Mark Earl; a son, Evan Thomas McClain; a daughter, Claire Louise Mologianes; an infant brother, Edwin Merwin; two brothers: Cecil Merwin and Richard Merwin; and a sister, Violet Bosin.
The visitation will be on Monday, September 10, 2012, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 31 East Division Street, Fond du Lac. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday at Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory with Rev. Justin Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in Rienzi Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations for a memorial garden in her honor will be established at Community United Methodist Church. Please forward donations, with notation “memorial garden”, in care of Jennifer Schmitz, W9570 State Road 23, Rosendale, WI 54974.
