Gloria Evangeline Alsop Jordon Carter, was born October 19, 1941 to the late Albert Mack Alsop and Dorothy Baylor Alsop, in Caroline County, VA. She departed this life on Sunday, August 26, 2012.
She attended the public schools of Spotsylvania County and was an honor graduate of John J. Wright Consolidated School, Class of 1959. She participated in Talent Shows, Spelling Bees, Dramatics Club, School Chorus and was Senior Class Vice President. She received a BS degree in Education with a minor in English and Psychology from Virginia Union University. At VUU, she was a member of the choir and enjoyed traveling to cities such as New York, Chicago, and Indianapolis.
Gloria began her teaching career in Orange County. After a year in California, she returned home to serve as Sunday School Superintendent and choir member. She served 36 years as Directress for Sylvannah Choirs. Gloria enjoyed a year on local TV, “The Gospel Experience” on RCC-TV with the Sylvannah Combined Choir. She recorded two CD’s in 1995, one of which was heard over WFVA radio. She attended the Thomas A. Dorsey and the James Cleveland Gospel Conventions where she participated in workshops teaching the more than 68 songs she composed. During retirement years , she directed other church choirs including Mt. Olive Choir, People’s Union Sanctuary Choir, Ebenezer Mass Choir (Fauquier County), and assisted at Mt. Zion (Fredericksburg). She enjoyed singing often at home and while traveling. She also enjoyed meditating and knew that she was God’s child.
She touched the lives of many children in grades four through eight during her 29 years of teaching before retiring because of her declining health. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Albert, Jr. and Phillip Alsop and her sister Gladys Alsop Ellis.
Gloria leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, Samuel H. Carter, Jr.; son, Samuel H. Carter III; step-daughter, Marcia Williamson of Delaware; sister, Peggy A. Alsop of Smithfield; two half-brothers, John Sulder of Fredericksburg and Earl Sulder of Spotsylvania; four grandchildren, Aliyah Woodyard of Radcliff, KY, Devonte Montel Carter, Landon Myles Carter, and Jeremiah Isaiah Carter of Spotsylvania; aunt, Landonia Taylor of Spotsylvania; uncle, Lewis Alsop of Spotsylvania; sister-in-law, Mabel Garnett of Milford; two brothers-in-law, Rufus Carter of Ft. Washington, MD and Alvin Garnett of Milford; and a host of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A viewing will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 31, 2012, at A. L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home with the family receiving friends 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held 12 noon Saturday, September 1, 2012, at Sylvannah Baptist Church, 8400 Courthouse Road, Spotsylvania, with interment in the church cemetery.
