Robert M. Johnson, 85, of 258 Horner Road, Wilcox, died Wednesday evening (Aug. 15, 2012) at the Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys, following a short illness.
He was born on April 6, 1927, in Kane, the son of Irving and Florence Anderson Johnson. He married Iva Joanne Smith on July 3, 1952. She died Dec. 27, 2003.
He was a lifelong resident of the community of Wilcox. He attended Wilcox High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and received his GED later in life. He was a veteran of World War II, serving at sea as a Yeoman 3rd class aboard the USS YMS 133.
He was employed by Stackpole Carbon Co. of Kane as a production supervisor for 22 years, retiring in 1989. He had also worked at Wilcox Town and Country doing hardware and appliance repair for several years.
He was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church of Wilcox, the Wilcox Lodge F & AM #571 and the Wilcox Historical Society. He enjoyed playing the piano and organ all his life, and enjoyed fishing, boating and traveling.
He is survived by one son, Bruce R. Johnson of Milford, Conn.; one daughter, Jane (Kevin) Conter of Clastonbury, Conn.; two granddaughters, Laura and Eric Conter; and one cousin, Ralph Johnson of Tacoma, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brother, Herbert "Herb" Johnson.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Nazareth Lutheran Church, Wilcox, with the Rev. Darell Justh officiating. Burial will be in Wilcox Cemetery. A Masonic Funeral Service will be conducted at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Sunday.
