U.S. Veteran

Richard Joseph Berry, 78, devoted and much beloved husband, father, brother and friend, passed away on July 3rd, 2012, in Lomita, California. As was his nature he did not complain but heroically fought cancer with all his might, however he finally passed away in his home surrounded by most of his loving family. Richard, "Dick" as he was known to many of his friends, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 21, 1934 to Marian Hauser and Edward A. Berry. Dick met the love of his life Rosa Burke, in San Diego, California, and they got married in 1962. They had two children, Christa Berry Searcy and Richard Alan Berry. "Mom and Dad" welcomed many people into their loving home, but none more special than Carl Carter who became their second son. Dick proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was Honor Man of his company. After his naval service, Dick began a career in the aerospace industry and soon found a home with Hughes Aircraft where he remained a valued and trusted leader and mentor until his retirement in 1995. Faith, Family, Loyalty and a strong work ethic were the cornerstones of his life. In his retirement he enjoyed gardening, working and spending time with his best friend and brother David, as well as a passion for Drum and Bugle Corps. He also discovered leisure travel and visited his son in Europe and daughter in Texas regularly. He lost his adoring wife Rosa in 1998 and a day never passed when he did not mourn and miss her. He is survived by his daughter Christa, her husband Mark and granddaughter Skylar, his son Richard A. Berry and partner Frank Campbell, Carl, his wife Sarah and their son Nathan, his brother David and wife Gayle, his brother Edward G. Berry and his sister Nancy Berry Jewell and her husband Jim. He leaves behind many whom he loved, especially The Lee Family, his friends and former colleagues, all his wonderful neighbors, and his DCI Family especially Larry, Jeff and Steve. The Memorial Service will be on Tuesday July 31st at 7:00 p.m. and Funeral Mass on Wednesday, August 1st at 10:00 a.m. Both the Memorial Service and the Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 25511 Eshelman Ave., Lomita, CA 90717. He will be interred at Green Hill Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes, California. A.M. Gamby Funeral Home
