Herbert J. Davis

U.S. Veteran

Mr. Herbert J. Davis Herbert Davis was born in Colquitt County, Georgia on August 14, 1935. He departed this life on Monday, July 23, 2012. Herbert was the only son of Holton Davis and Lucy May Jordan Davis. After losing his mother at an early age, he thrived under the loving care of his extended family. Herbert attended the public schools in Moultrie, Georgia. Upon graduation from high school he went to attend A&T College in Greensboro, North Carolina and served in the United States Air Force after college. On a visit to his family in Long Island, New York he met his future wife Carolyn. On May 21, 1960 he was married to Carolyn Hawkins, the daughter of Alexander and Evelyn Hawkins. To this union were born two children Julie and Andre. Herbert was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Carolyn of 52 years. He was a caring and dedicated father and grandfather. Herbert was a hard working man, often holding down two or three jobs until he began to work at Long Island Lighting Co. (LILCO) where he retired from in 1994. Herbert enjoyed using his hands and was happiest building things around the house. He also had a love of westerns and his model trains. Herbert was a die-hard New York Giants fan. Although Herbert was taken from us suddenly, he has given us a lifetime of memories to sustain us. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Carolyn; a devoted daughter, Julie; a caring son Andre and daughter-in-law Carrie; grandchildren: Alisha, Randy, Nicole, Melissa, Roger, Tinisha, Andre, Julian, Zachary, Devon, Anthony and Jordan; great-grandchildren: Jaysen, Justin, Joey, Natalia, Jasmine and Khyler; and a host of other relatives and friends. A Funeral service will be held Saturday, 12 Noon, July 28, 2012 at Johnson Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, located at 530 S. Sycamore St, Petersburg, VA 23803 with Rev. Robert Dye officiating. Public viewing will be held Friday, July 27, 2012 from 3-8 PM at the funeral home. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the staff of Joseph M. Johnson and Son Funeral Home, 530 S. Sycamore St, Petersburg, VA 23803 (804) 863-4411.
