Helen Acerbo of Pearl River passed away on July 3, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. She had spent the last several weeks at the Joe Raso Hospice in New City and was surrounded by family when she passed. During the course of her life, Helen touched thousands of lives both personally and professionally. She worked for the Rockland County Health Dept. for 34 years as a nurse and Nurse Supervisor, providing care to those in need. She also served countless young families providing healthcare at the Head Start program in Nyack, NY. Because of her love of nursing, her compassion, and her desire to interact with others she continued to work part-time as a Home Care Nurse for Nyack Hospital after retiring from the Health Dept. She was a member of the American Nurses Assoc., American Federation of Teachers and the AOH Ladies Div III. Helen was born April 9, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph and Helen (Kroeplin) Heaney. She graduated from Niagara University in 1961 with a BS in Nursing, from Long Island University in 1989 with a Masters in Public Administration and from Pace University in 1994 with a Masters in Nursing-Family Nurse Practitioner. She has always valued and encouraged her children and others to continue on with their education and that learning never ends. Helen was a voracious reader, she loved golfing, spending the winter in Florida, and many crafts. Helen will always be remembered as a compassionate caregiver, to her family, friends, and her community. Always wearing a warm smile she was a great listener who always left you feeling better then you did before. If you talked to her for 5 minutes, you felt you knew her a lifetime. She had an uncanny ability to spot another Brooklynite any place she went. I guess you can take the girl out of Brooklyn, but you can’t take the Brooklyn out of the girl. Helen married Edward Acerbo on April 26, 1997. She is survived by her husband Eddie, her children Lynn Walz and her husband Tom of Upton, Tim of Baltimore, Suzanne Caligiuri and her husband Jim of Queensbury, Kevin of Pearl River, John of Pearl River, her sister Eleanor Kinney of Scranton, PA, and 7 grandchildren, Dylan, Conor, Danielle, Erin, Kaitlin, Ben, Aiden and 5 step-children. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 8, 2012 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home at 100 Franklin Ave, Pearl River, NY. A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 9, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St Margaret’s Church, 33 North Magnolia St, Pearl River, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joe Raso Hospice of United Hospice of Rockland: https://npo.networkforgood.org
