U.S. Veteran

LCDR, Roy Alvin Kelley, Ret. USN., 82, passed away on June 30, 2012 in Pensacola, FL. He was born on January 31, 1930 in Quanah, Texas. Son of Robert Andrew Kelley and Virginia Ann (Ray) Kelley. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Joanna. He is survived by one brother Dr. Charles Kelley (Helen), one son Robert Kelley (Susan), two daughters, Suzanne Kelley and Colleen Kelley and grand children Andrew and Regan, one sister-in-law Loreeta Kelley and two brothers-in-law, William Howard Browning Jr. (Betty Ann) and Robert Watson Browning (Linda) and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Roy graduated from Quanah High School in 1947, and then graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1953. He then received an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School in 1961. During his military career, Roy taught at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and later became a flight Instructor at NAS Pensacola, FL. During his education career, Roy taught Math at the International Baccalaureate Program at Pensacola High School. Later after retiring from PHS, he then taught Math at Escambia Christian School and became a math tutor. Roy’s hobbies included being an active member at Gateway Church of Christ where he served as an Elder. He enjoyed woodworking, building and flying radio-controlled model planes, traveling, and reading. Services will be 11 a.m. Graveside, Friday July 6, 2012 at Barrancas National Cemetery. Officiating will be Ministers Frank Thomann and Jim Caples. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Escambia Christian School and Covenant Hospice. A Reception celebrating Roy’s life will immediately be following at Gateway Church of Christ.
