Claire Carroll, widow of Leonard F. Carroll, died on June 23, 2012, in Nashua, NH. She was a resident of Intervale Road in Springfield, MA for 46 years.
A native of Chicopee, MA, she was the daughter of Postmaster Cornelius T. and Mrs. Elsie (Gleason) O’Neil. She was a graduate of Holy Name High School and Salem State College. She received a Master’s Degree from Boston University and completed a sixth year of study at Indiana University where she was a teaching assistant.
She was a business teacher in the Chicopee Public schools from 1943 to 1950. She transferred to the Springfield School system in 1950 and taught there until her retirement in 1985. Most of that time was spent at the High School of Commerce, which she loved.
Before moving she was a member of Holy Cross Church and was active in its senior citizens. She is a member of the College Club of Springfield, the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts, and the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees.
In Nashua, she was a member of St. Patrick’s Church.
She is survived by a son, Thomas Carroll, of New Boston, NH, a daughter Mary Murphy, and her husband, Michael, of Bedford, NH, and a son, John Carroll, and his wife, Elaine, of Lunenburg, MA, and two grandsons, Devin and Shane Carroll.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Parish Church, at 104 Springfield St., Chicopee on Friday, June 29 at 11 am with burial in Calvary cemetery also in Chicopee. In lieu of flowers, donations in Claire’s memory may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association or to a charity of ones choice.
