Merle “Chick” W. Ackert, Jr., 80, formerly of Russell St., Middletown and Durham, died Wednesday June 20, 2012 at Middlesex Hospital.
He was born on October 5, 1931 in Danby, VT, the son of the late Merle “Zib” Ackert and Leda Mae (Parmenter) Livingston. Chick was raised in Mt. Tabor, Danby and Chittenden, VT. A veteran of Korean and Vietnam Wars, he served with the US Army and later the US Marine Corps. Prior to his retirement, managed oil terminals in Portland for 31 years and later was a delivery driver for Hoffman Auto, Hartford.
Chick was lifetime member of the Durham Rod & Gun Club, served for many years on various town of Durham Boards, a two term Deacon of the United Churches of Durham, a member of the VFW Post 583, Middletown, American Legion Post 31, Rutland, VT, Mason with Masonic Lodge #76, Danby, VT.
He is survived by his daughter, Jackie Downes of Vero Beach, FL; a brother, Tom Ackert of Middletown; step sons, Dale Guerton of FL, James Russo and William Russo, both of Portland; step daughters, Sandra Brown of NC and Kathy Gates of FL; former wife, Helen (Aubin) Ackert of Cromwell; seventeen grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Aurlie Jan (Alden) Ackert; and his son, Merle “Dolph” W. Ackert, III.
Chick’s family is grateful for the care and compassion from the nurses and staff of Apple Rehabilitation in Middletown during his stay there.
