John Leland Baughman, 74, a lifelong resident of Frazeysburg, Ohio, died in his sleep (exactly the way he would have wanted it!) at his home on Monday, June 18, 2012. Born August 5, 1937 in Leonardville, Ohio he was the son of the late Kenneth and Grace (Hunter) Baughman and was a 1955 graduate of Frazeysburg High School. Following high school he began his career in the oil well drilling business, first working for Baughman Drilling until 1963, then for Glenn Wheeler Drilling. He later worked for, and retired from, R & L Excavating until approximately 2007. John was known for his sense of humor and ‘strong’ language and he entertained listeners with stories of growing up in Frazeysburg, years on a drilling rig, and multiple hunting adventures. Many people have referred to his “story telling” and have commented on how much they loved listening to his stories. John never met a stranger, always “practicing his social skills”, he would stop and talk to anyone and always had a joke or story ready. John loved gardening and sharing what he grew with friends and family and by all accounts, was a jack of all trades. Laura always said he could fix just about anything if given enough time to think about it. John took great pride in his children and grandchildren and had a soft spot for many dogs (and even a few cats!) throughout the years. Surviving is his wife of 47 years, Laura (Davis) Baughman whom he married October 18, 1964; daughter Richelle (Shell) Stevens and her husband Jesse of Jacksonville, Florida; son Jason Baughman and his wife Terra Sue (Pollock) Baughman of Frazeysburg; grandchildren Reagan and Kendall Baughman; sister Shirley (Baughman) Peck, of Thornville, Ohio; niece and nephew Terri Payne and Todd Wilson; and many extended family and friends. Calling hours will be 5 to 8pm Thursday, June 21, 2012 at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street. Funeral services will be 1:00pm Friday, June 22, 2012 at the funeral home with the Rev. Al Van Fossen officiating. Burial will be in Frazeysburg Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Genesis Hospice, 713 Forest Avenue, Zanesville, Ohio 43701.
