Dr. Jerles was born in Macon to the late Thomas Elmer Jerles and Sally Rowland Jerles and was raised in Adrian, Georgia. He proudly served his country as a pilot in the U. S. Navy. He earned degrees from South Georgia College, where he served as Student Body President, and from Mercer University. Also, he was on Basketball Scholarships at both colleges. He was a member of The Kappa Alpha Order and was later inducted into the Kappa Alpha Court of Honor. In 1963, Dr. Jerles graduated from Emory Dental School and moved to Perry, where he would raise his family and begin his Family Dentistry Practice. Many of his patients say he always had a kind smile and gave a friendly pat on the shoulder at every visit. Dr. Jerles was a member of the Central District Dental Society and was President in 1975 and 1976. He was on the Georgia Board of Dental Examiners and was honored to have administered the state board exam to many of today's practicing dentists. He was a member of the Georgia Academy of Dental Practice, where he served as President 1996-1997. Dr. Jerles was elected by the American College of Dentists as a Fellow of the American College of Dentistry. He was a long-time member of Perry United Methodist Church and previously served on the Administrative Board. A Founding Father of The Westfield School, Dr. Jerles was given The Westfield School Heritage Award in 2011 for his continued dedication and service to the school. Through the years, Dr. Jerles loved to play golf and was a member of Houston Lake Country Club and Idle Hour Country Club. In later life, watching the news was one of his favorite things to do. Most importantly to him, Dr. Jerles loved his family and never missed an opportunity to let them know how much. He was preceded in death by both of his brothers, Thomas E. Jerles, Jr., and Joseph F. Jerles.
Left to cherish his memories are his beloved wife of over 52 years, Peggy Pearson Jerles of Perry; his children, William Rowland "Billy" Jerles, Jr. (Dawn) of Perry, Matthew Lawton Jerles (Tami) of Macon; and Kelly Amelia Jerles-Blackwelder (Tom) of Perry; his grandchildren, William Rowland "Row" Jerles, III, Thomas Hudson Jerles, Amelia Tesch Jerles, and Eugene Paul Jerles; and his many nieces and nephews.
