To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven; a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
On March 22, 1940, James C. Handley Sr. (J.C.) and Theodisa Mays Handley were blessed with their fifth child, Nelson Deboid Handley, in Lakeview, Arkansas. He was raised in a Christian home, and he was taught to honor God at all times. Nelson attended Lakeview High School and transitioned his life by joining the United States Army. He served his country well and faithfully before returning to his roots in Arkansas..
After his career in the U. S. Army, he was united in Holy matrimony to Versie Elaine Phillips on May 14, 1966. He worked at Doughboy Plastics for several years to provide for his family. Also, he pursued his love and passion for carpentry work throughout Helena-West Helena and the surrounding areas. He spent many years building homes and businesses until his health began to decline. He will be forever remembered for his giving spirit, amazing kindness, wittiness and his easy going personality.
For seventy-two years, God granted us with a gentle spirit, and on June 9, 2012, God visited the Crestpark Retirement Home in Helena, Arkansas to welcome Nelson back home. He is survived by his wife Versie E. Handley of Wynne, Arkansas; five children: Nelson (Sharlin) Handley, Jr. of Helena, AR, Victor Handley and Allen Handley of Memphis, TN, Patricia (Scott) Cox of Bowie, MD, and Juaniece (William) of Gary, IN and Addie Avery both of Memphis, TN; three loving brothers, James (Anna) Handley, Jr. & Theodore Handley both of Gary, IN, and Jimmie (Francis) of Millington, TN, six grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends. Both parents; J.C. & Theodisa Handley, his brother, Carl Dwight Handley, and sister, Ethelyn Jones, preceded him in death.
Nelson’s legacy of family will be forever cherished through many generations. His family and friends are submissive to the Lord’s will to take him home, but we will miss him dearly. May God welcome Nelson into his loving arms to grant him eternal peace.
