Lee “Dick” Bunton, 83, of Mendota died May 26, 2012, in Heritage Health, Mendota. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church, Mendota with the Rev. Michael Morrell officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota with military rites by VFW Post 4079. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday in the church. Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota provided arrangements. He was born Nov. 23, 1928, in Barton County, Mo., to Earl and Audrey (Worsley) Bunton. He married Nancy Cummings on Oct. 3, 1951. in Mendota. He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a 1946 graduate of Mendota High School. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mendota Elks Lodge 1212 where he was past exalted ruler, Mendota Moose Lodge, Mendota Lions Club, American Legion Post 504 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4079. He served on the Mendota High School board of education where he was past president. He farmed in Lee and La Salle counties and was active with Lee County Soil and Water Conservation District which awarded him with Farmer of the Year. He was employed by King Implement, Mendota for a number of years and was a real estate appraiser. He played fast pitch softball while in the service and continued to play in local and area fast pitch leagues after leaving the service. He was active in many local charities and community activities. He is survived by two sons, Steve (Susan) Bunton of Rochelle and Rick (Cheryl) Bunton of Oregon, Ill.; four grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Otterbach of Mendota and Daphne Allen of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; one brother, John (Lin) Bunton of California; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, on May 25, 2012; one son, James, in infancy; and two sisters, Patsy Salander and Helen Gardner. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church, Mendota, or the donor’s choice.
