Graveside services for R. L. Coberly will be at 10:00 AM., Thursday, May 31, 2012 at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery, Lubbock, TX, under the direction of Agape Funeral Chapel.
RL Coberly was born in Oklahoma Territory June 4, 1915, the son of Pearl Moser Coberly and Homer Coberly, who was widely known as the “Cowboy Preacher”. RL was raised and lived most of his life in Texas. He served as a US Army Medic during WWII stationed in Alaska. He married Ruby Sims in 1946, and they had two children, Richard Lynn and Eulanda Renee’.
The family owned Coberly Music in Lubbock, and he was renowned throughout the region as an accomplished piano tuner/technician. He later founded a piano tuning & maintenance program at Grayson County College in Sherman, Texas. RL married Sally (Sarah Mae) Beatty in 1970, and they lived in California near her family for several years prior to her death.
RL returned to Lubbock in 2007, where he spent the remainder of his life. He died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 96 on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, one week shy of his 97th birthday.
RL was preceded in death by one grandchild, Kevin Roop. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Richard Coberly and Veronica Veerkamp, Renee’ and Gary Wells, as well as Sally’s children Sonja and Larry Roop, Chip and Connie Beatty, 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great granddaughter, and his special pal Edna Osborne.
