Woodrow Wilson Sumerlin, 86, of 120 Carters Court, Coinjock, NC, died Sunday, May 20, 2012 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Mr. Sumerlin was born in Edgecombe County and was the son of the late George Allen, Sr. and Alice May Savage Sumerlin. Retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, he was a veteran of the US Navy having served as a Seabee during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Alma Culver, Annie Lee Canoles, and Frances Driver; and two brothers, George, Jr. and William Sumerlin.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Maud Sybil Simmons Sumerlin; four daughters, Carol Moore of San Antonio, TX, Linda Long and husband Tony of Currituck, Kay Davey and husband Kevin of Elizabeth City, and Beth O'Briant and husband Paul of Moyock; a sister, Celeta Swanson of Kenner, LA; a brother, Dodsworth Sumerlin of Nashville, NC; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
At his request, no services will be held. Friends may join the family at the residence. Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, is assisting the family with arrangements.
