Sheridan M. Christian "Shug"

passed away peacefully April 6, 2012 at his residence in Smithfield, Ohio. He was born on Dec. 4, 1933 in Smithfield, OH to the late Charles and Leota Christian.

Sheridan was educated in the Smithfield School System. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years until his health failed. He was a veteran from the US Navy. He worked and retired from the Weirton Steel Corp. He was a Fireman and the first Black Lieutenant in the Steubenville Fire Department.

Sheridan was very active and enjoyed serving his community. He was a councilman and former Mayor of Smithfield, Ohio and also served on the Board of Public Affairs. He was Past President of Brooke, Hancock and Jefferson Counties Metropolitan Planning Commission, Past President Regional Planning Commission, on the Board of Directors for United Way, member of Smithfield Historical Society, AARP, NAACP, (BEDO) Black Elected Democrats of Ohio, Ohio Mayors Assn, National Black Mayors Assn and Post 396 American Legion.

He was also Past Master of Eastern Light Lodge # 64, Past Patron for the Queen of the South #22 OES, A 32nd Degree Maon Bezaleel Consisory #15 Cleveland, Ohio, a Shriner AL KaF #109 Akron, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons; Sheridan (Skip) and Kenneth Christian and sisters; Marguarite West and Elaine Dulin and a son in law Lionel White.

He is survived by his beloved wife; Mary L. Christian, children; Michael (Gwendolyn) Christian of Las Vegas, NV, Sandra White of Woodbridge, VA, Rhonda Skelton of Stone Mountain, GA, Rose M., Demetria, Jamaya, Destiny, Shayuana and Shane all of Smithfield, OH, stepchildren; Mary (John) Panjusecek of Richmond, OH and Danny (Joyce) Flaherty of Smithfield, OH, a host grand and great grandchildren, sisters; Eunice Christian and Julia Dokes of Smithfield, OH, Carol Cooper of Bloomingdale, OH, Judith Cylar of Cleveland Heights, OH, a brother; Vernon (Bonita) Christian of San Diego, CA, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host a dear friends.

Visitation Tues., April 10, 2012 at the Williams, Gregory and Martin Funeral Home, 411 N. 7th Street, Steubenville, OH from 6:00PM-8:00PM.

Funeral Service Wed., April 11th at 11:00AM at the funeral home with Rev. Norries A. Hood, Sr. as Officiant.

Burial will follow at the Northern Cemetery in Smithfield, OH
