Rochester, Owen P. McKenney, 82, of Rochester died Wednesday April 4, 2012 at the Hyder Hospice House in Dover.

Born in Dover February 17, 1930 the son of Owen and Eva (DeCourcy) McKenney. He was a proud member and graduate of Dover High School, Class of 1948 and lived in Dover most of his life prior to moving to Rochester several years ago. He served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict.

Owen was the area’s #1 Youth Sports Fan having been very involved with his children’s school sports activities, was a longtime coach and umpire for Dover Northside and Dover Southside Little League programs, and also coached Pee-Wee Football. He was a loyal fan of local high school football, basketball and other sporting events. Owen was also a longtime member of the Dover Sports Hall of Fame and was inducted in 1997.

Owen was employed by General Electric, the City of Dover as a police officer, D.F. Richard Oil Co., Rowell & Watson Oil Co. and Seabrook Station. After many years of part time work at Tasker Funeral Home, he joined them as a full-time employee until his retirement. Perhaps Owen’s favorite job was as a crossing guard for St. Mary Academy in Dover and later for the Rochester Schools.

Owen was a member and past Grand Knight of the Dover Council Knights of Columbus, both third and fourth degree, and was a life member and past trustee of the Dover Lodge of Elks.

He was a communicant of the Parish of the Assumption, Dover.

He is survived by his wife of 53-years Jacqueline (LaBonte) McKenney, five children Kathy Barbone and husband, Joseph of Bradford, MA, Peter McKenney, Michael McKenney and wife, Valerie and David McKenney all of Dover, James McKenney and wife, Darcy of Rochester, a sister Gertrude McKenney of Rochester; sister-in-law Maureen Hillsgrove of Dover; a daughter-in-law, Mary Towle McKenney of Dover; and many nieces and nephews.

Owen’s greatest joy in life was his grandchildren. He was Pepere to Jessica and Michael Barbone, Taylor, Spencer and Reegan McKenney, Patrick McKenney, Stephanie Riding and Jacqueline McKenney, Delaney McKenney and Derek Scott.

He was predeceased by his brother Daniel McKenney.

Friends are invited to call Monday April 9th from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. Dover.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Parish of the Assumption, St. Mary Church; corner of Chestnut & Third Sts. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery.

Memorials in his name may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Envelopes will be made available at the funeral home.
