William N. Akins, Jr.

Homegoing celebration for Deacon William Nelson Akins, Jr., of Tampa, will be held Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, 4025 W. Palmetto Street, Tampa, FL 33607 with the Pastor, Reverend Anthony W. Greene, officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Tampa, FL with military honors.

Deacon William Nelson Akins, Jr. was born October 17, 1925 in Tampa, Florida to Annie Rae and William Nelson Akins, Sr. He went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 7, 2012. He was raised in the Hyde Park Community in his early years.

After his early education in the Hillsborough County School System, he served his country during World War II. He was injured in active duty and received an honorable discharge from the United States Army as Sgt. First Class. After coming home, he went to trade school under the G.I. Bill to obtain proficiency as a tailor. His spiritual beginnings started at New Salem Primitive Baptist Church where his grandfather, John Chester Price was co-founder.

Deacon William Akins was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens where he obtain his Deaconship under the pastorate of Reverend John A. Stephens.

Deacon Akins will always be remembered at First Baptist for his services as church van driver as he served the entire church family. “Come and go to that Land”, his favorite jubilee will also be remembered and cherished.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Olga C. Akins; his father and mother, William Akins, Sr. and Annie Rae Akins; son, Donald Thomas; sisters, Mary Katherine Upshaw and Maude Rae Waters; brother, Leo Akins and granddaughter, Yolanda Murray.

He leaves to cherish fond memories; daughters, Delores Hudson; Lee Etta Stephens (David); Leafie Lee (Lewis); Yvonne Lee and Cynthia McTier (Frank; grandchildren, William Murray, Clifford Roach, Jr., James Williams (Tamika), Renee Cox (Quenton), Rhonda Pettis, Stephen Williams (Magnolia), Jerald Murray (Felicia), Reginald Roach, Robert (Akins) Thomas, Reginald Coonce, Jr. (Javida), Malcolm Bell Thomas, Sharon Blossom, Rhonda Troupe (Danny), Celinda Stephens, Cierra Stephens, Ari Stephens, Briana Stephens and Donnie Stephens; godchildren, Marie and Donald White and Cedric Lawson; 36 great grandchildren; 14 great great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Delia Engram and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

His visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. and the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:00 P.M. Friday, February 18, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, 4025 W. Palmetto Street – Tampa, FL 33607.
