Cora V. Esch, 90 of Spalding, Nebraska died Friday evening, January 27, 2012 at the Omaha Nursing Center in Omaha, Nebraska following a short illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Spalding with Fr. Don Buhrman officiating. Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday from 5-7 p.m. at the Church with a 7:00 p.m. Wake Service.
Memorials are suggested to St. Michael’s Catholic Church Windows, St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Spalding Academy.
Cora Vivian Esch, the daughter of George and Ethel (Kearnes) Sparks was born August 31, 1921 at Walthill, Nebraska. She grew up in the Walthill and Macy communities, graduating from Macy High School in 1940. Following high school she worked in Sioux City, IA and later came to help her sister Pearl McVeigh following the birth of the McVeigh twins in Spalding, Nebraska. It was there where she met and married Laurence (Shorty) Esch on November 4, 1941 at St. Michael Catholic Church.
The couple lived in the Spalding community their entire married lives where they farmed and raised their ten children. Cora was a long-time member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, St Anne Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America, Daughters of the American Revolution, Rosary Group, and a founding member of the Writer’s Club. She was a published author, book committee member of the Early Days of Spalding and the St Michael's Centennial book, St Michael's cookbook 1st edition, and an avid genealogist. For many years she and Shorty operated the Esch Haus Bed & Breakfast.
Surviving Cora are her children: Laurence Jr. of Hastings, NE; David (Lynne) of Broomfield, CO; Dennis (Kathleen) of Omaha; Pat (Arlene) of Springfield, CO; Regina (Ron) Worthington of Omaha; Paul (Sara) of Carmichael, CA; Ray (Mindy) of Platteville, CO; Tim (Yvonne) of Spalding, NE; Judy (Don) Brown of Fayetteville, AR; Don (Linda) of Syracuse, NE; 43 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; 1 Brother Ray (Patricia) Sparks of Denver, CO; 3 Sisters: Rosemary McManaman of Dallas, TX; Lila Jones of Oakland, NE; Donna (Steve) Sutton of Lincoln, NE; 1 Brother-in-law Bernard Esch of Carlsbad, CA, along with many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Laurence, son Matthew, and 2 grandsons Jeff Esch and Joseph Worthington.
