Charlotte, NC- Mrs. Hilda Addleton, age 89, of Charlotte, North Carolina, formerly of Macon and Warner Robins, Georgia, joined her husband, Leon, in Heaven on January 23, 2012. She was born in Macon, Georgia on December 20, 1922 to Raymond and Lela Glass.
Early in life Hilda committed her life to the Lord. She felt God’s calling to be a missionary. While attending Chicago Evangelistic Institute, the love of her life asked for her hand in marriage. This marriage led Leon and Hilda on a journey into the ministry for 56 years. The mission field did not become a reality but she did fulfill her desire to serve the Lord by supporting her husband in his ministry. They both attended and graduated from Wake Forest Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. In fact, they were the first couple to graduate together. After Leon’s death in 1999, life was never the same. She had lost her life partner after 58 happy years together. Along with numerous health problems as well as Alzheimer’s Disease, Hilda spent her last years at Lawyers Glen Retirement Center in Charlotte, NC, with her daughter, Marveen, as her caretaker.
Hilda was a devoted and loving mother to her two children: Larry and Marveen. She instilled Christian values in them from an early age and never allowed them to forget that they were dearly loved. She will be fondly remembered and loved for her meaningful advice, inspiration, and “spunkiness.”
Hilda is survived by her children: Larry and wife, Phyllis; Marveen and husband, Roy. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Suzette, Alex, Mary and husband, Brett; Jennifer and husband, Matt. Hilda has two precious great-granddaughters, Summer and Grayson.
Hilda has two surviving sisters, Eloise Hunnicutt and Christine Ratliff and many adoring nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leon, her first born and very special granddaughter, Lisa, and her sisters: Myrtle Whitehead, Frances Coppock, Helen Summerlin, and Juanita Farr.
Special thanks to her granddaughter, Dr. Suzette Perry, for the loving care she gave her grandmother. Hilda was very fortunate to have a granddaughter as her physician. Also the family would like to thank the most wonderful staff at Lawyers Glen and Hospice for their love, support and compassionate care. They were such a blessing to her and made her final journey a peaceful one.
