John Barrett Hawkins (J.B.), age 90, died peacefully on December 19, 2011 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2PM on Thursday, December 22, 2011 at the Roberta Baptist Church with Rev. Mike McAfee, Rev. Mike Lewis, and Rev. Joe McDaniel officiating. Burial will follow in the Roberta Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6PM until 8PM on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at Goddard-McLeighton Funeral Home, 375 Duggar Avenue in Roberta, GA.
Coach Hawkins was born on September 9, 1921, in Spring Place, GA. After two years of attending Berry College, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force in July of 1942. He proudly served in the Pacific Theatre in Australia, the Philippines, New Guinea, and Japan during WWII. In 1945, he reentered Berry College and transferred to the University of Georgia in Athens in 1947, receiving a B.B.A. Degree in Accounting in 1948.
However, his true passion in life was teaching and coaching. Upon college graduation, he began his life-long career at Bowden High School in Bowden, GA where he taught science and civics in addition to coaching basketball, baseball, and track. In 1955, he and his family moved to Roberta, GA where he taught mathematics and coached boys and girls basketball, baseball, and track for 25 years. In his 32 years of coaching, he won an amazing 1074 games, also winning one State Championship and taking nineteen teams to the Georgia High School State Tournament. He was inducted into the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2004 and into the Murray County Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. To honor Coach Hawkins, The Crawford County Sports Complex is named the “J.B. Hawkins Sports Complex” and the “J.B. Hawkins Christmas Tournament” is played in Roberta every year.
Active in civic and church affairs, Mr. Hawkins served as a Deacon of the Roberta Baptist Church for 45 years. He also taught Sunday School and was the Sunday School Superintendent. He was also the Charter President of the Roberta Lions Club.
Mr. Hawkins is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mae Patterson Hawkins; daughter Dr.Jennifer Hawkins Allen (Bruce) of Macon, GA; son Dr. John Charles (Chuck) Hawkins (Kathy) of Macon, GA; granddaughters Dr. Lindsay Lefler (Will) of Portland, OR, Greer Hawkins of Atlanta, GA, and Jean Hawkins of Auburn, AL; grandson Blake Allen of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; sister Genevie Urban of Bethesda, MD; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Sally and William Lester Hawkins of Spring Place, GA; sisters Aughtie Hawkins of Washington, D.C. and Mary Bell Smith of Spring Place, GA; and brothers William Lester Hawkins, Jr. of Spring Place, GA and Timothy Hawkins of Rome, GA; and nephew Lawrence Hawkins of Portland, OR.
