Born November 8, 1910 in Seattle; died October 16, 2011 in Seattle. She is survived by her children, Gregory Bernier and Kathleen Sloan; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Henry Bernier, her husband of 33 years; her daughter, Patricia Bernier Sweet; and her sister, Virginia Reich.
Mayme attended Horace Mann Grade School, Garfield High School, and in 1934 graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts. Later she received a Certificate in Library Science. She went on to work as a librarian at the Seattle Public Library.
In 1935, she met Henry Bernier, “The only man I ever loved”. They married in 1937 and began their family. Wife, mother, homemaker; these were her roles, her jobs, and she did them well. She was smart, creative, capable, kind and generous. After her husband died in 1970, Mayme enjoyed traveling with her friends. She said, “It was fun to go and fun to come home”.
Mayme died peacefully three weeks before her 101st birthday. She never lost her positive attitude, her enjoyment of music and family, or her sense of humor. She had lived independently in her home on Capitol Hill until she was 95. Her quiet wisdom and her love shall be missed.
