Melvin Sidney Barnes, 90, of Texarkana, Texas died Sunday, September 4, 2011 at his residence.
Mr. Barnes was born March 22, 1921 in Cotton Valley, Louisiana. He was a retired elementary school principal having served at Oaklawn Elementary School. He formerly was with the Bossier Parish school board, Bossier City, La., where he also worked with the YMCA as day camp director during summer months. Before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he received his high school education at Newellton High in Newellton, La. There he received recognition and high honors as an All-State football player two years. After military service he received his B.A. degree from East Texas Baptist College, Marshall and his masters degree at the University of Texas. Mr. Barnes favorite pastime was raising cattle on the farm.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Barnes of Texarkana, Texas; one daughter and son in-law, Carolyn and Richard Walker of Texarkana, Texas; one sister, Dr. Mary E. Harris of Sulphur Springs, Tx.; one brother and sister in-law, Johnny M. and Bettye Barnes of Benton, La.; three grandchildren, Nicholas and his wife, Julie Walker, Daniel Walker and Lydia Walker; one great grandchild, Bailey Walker, all of Texarkana.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Texarkana Funeral Home, Texas chapel with Rev. J. B. Yelverton officiating. Burial will be at East Memorial Gardens with military rites.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
