Isabel C. Ballou, age 96, life resident of Lacona, passed away January 5, 2011 at Samaritan Keep Home in Watertown. Isabel was born on March 4, 1914 in the town of Ellisburg, the daughter of J. Hamilton and Euphemia R. Franklin Chrisman. She moved with her parents to the town of Boylston at the age of eight months, where she resided all her life. She graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1932, receiving the General Merit Award, and from Pulaski Training Class the following year. She began her teaching career in 1933 at a one-room school, the VanAuken School District #3 in the town of Boylston. She remained at the VanAuken School for three years, and then was asked to join the staff at the Sandy Creek Central School. She continued her education at Oswego State University and received her BS in Education in 1961. Isabel earned 34 additional credits of graduate study at Oswego and Potsdam State Universities.
She remained on the faculty at Sandy Creek Central School, teaching Kindergarten and Fourth Grade until her retirement in 1973. In 1971, she was the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award. Isabel found every experience of her thirty years of teaching most rewarding. In 2006, she was inducted into the Wall of Distinction at Sandy Creek Central School, an honor which recognizes alumni for their high level of professionalism and character.
Isabel married Clyde A. Ballou on March 4, 1935 at the home of his brother, Leslie, in Syracuse, with Reverend Elmer Russell officiating. They owned and operated a dairy farm from 1935 until 1954. Clyde worked for Boylston Highway Department for 18 years, serving as Highway Superintendent for six years and retiring in 1972. They both enjoyed traveling, taking trips to Alaska, Newfoundland, and California. They also spent much of their time together doing crafts and enjoying nature and wildflower photography. After 60 years of marriage, Mr. Ballou died on January 5, 1996.
Isabel served as the first female juror in the Oswego County Courts from the town of Boylston. She was a member of the Oswego County Retired Teachers' Association, an honorary member of the New York State Retired Teachers' Association, and a member of the National Teachers Association. She was a member of the Sandy Creek Grange since 1930, serving as a member of the 4th Degree Team, and musician for the organization. From an early age, Isabel's inherent love of music brought much joy into her life. She was also a member of the Halfshire Historical Society, the New York State Bluebird Society, and the Rhadamant Chapter NSDAR. She served as Past Noble Grand with the Mistletoe Rebekkah Lodge. She held various other offices within these organizations as well.
Surviving, a sister, Virginia B. (Frederick H.) Peter of Lacona. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Isabel is predeceased by one son, David, who in 1954, passed away at the age of 12, and three brothers, Alfred, Rex and Harwood.
Funeral Services will be held 12:00 p.m., noon, Saturday, at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski with a spring burial in Boylston- Sandy Creek Wesleyan Cemetery, Boylston, with Reverend Brian Snyder officiating. Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. prior to the funeral. Donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
