PFC Ethan L. Goncalo, 21, passed away in Afghanistan on December 11th. Born in Fall River. He attended Bishop Connolly High School for 3 years and transferred to B.M.C. Durfee High from where he graduated in 2008. An accomplished baseball player, he started his career at Columbus Park as a pitcher. He went on to play in competition all over the U.S. for numerous travel teams, including Hit Dogs, Fall River Bulldogs, and Team Connecticut (out of Hartford). He also played Legion Ball for the Bombers out of Post #454 and for Post #145 out of Westport. He established himself as a catcher at Connolly and Durfee and then also played for a short time at Westfield State. He also played basketball and football in high school. Ethan joined the Mass. Army National Guard last March and was deployed in August as a member of Headquarters & Headquarters Co. 1/181 Infantry Battalion (one of the oldest regiments in the US Army) and he enjoyed the infantry very much. Survivors include his father, Louis P. Goncalo, Jr. (wife Beth Goncalo) of Fall River; mother, Kelly Reed of Roxbury; brothers, Matt Reed and Michael Goncalo; grandparents, John and Cindy Getchell, Jr., grandmothers, Judy Pires & Carolyn Reed; grandfather, Walter Bonner; 5 nieces, several uncles, aunts and many cousins. He was also grandson of the late Louis P. “Chippy” Goncalo. PFC Goncalo was waked on Wednesday, December 22, at his Alma Mater (Durfee High School). His funeral with full military honors was held on Thursday, December 23, with a mass in Holy Rosary Church followed by committal services at St. Patrick Cemetery.
